Complexity Meets Heritage
15 - 17 February 2027
Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice, Italy
Complexity Meets Heritage is a three-day, hands-on research workshop bringing together complex systems science and digital humanities in the unique setting of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice, on February 15–17, 2027.
Organised in collaboration with the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, the event will gather Master’s students, PhD candidates, and early-career researchers from diverse scientific backgrounds to explore the Foundation’s rich digital collections. Working in small interdisciplinary teams and guided by experts, participants will apply methods from network science, data science, and artificial intelligence to uncover hidden connections, patterns, and historical dynamics in cultural heritage data. Through a combination of invited lectures, collaborative research, and scientific discussions, teams will develop original analyses, share their findings, and contribute to a joint scientific report.
More than a traditional workshop, Complexity Meets Heritage is an opportunity to learn by doing research, venture beyond disciplinary boundaries, and discover what complex systems science can reveal about our cultural past.
